2023 30th November We had the annual lab outing at Kobe Harbor land. And Mariia and Sara left the lab.
2nd October Phng Lab welcomed 3 new members! Haymar is joining us as a post-doctoral researcher after completing her PhD at Okayama University. Mingzhao is a PhD student who is enrolled at Department of Biological Science, Osaka University. And Sara is doing a 2-month internship in our lab from Vrije Universiteit Brussel. 25th-29th September Li-Kun gave talks at A*Star Skin Research Labs and at the MBI Conference “Mechanobiology in Health and Disease”, Singapore 4th August Li-Kun attended her first LeDucq ReVAMP consortium bi-annual meeting in Boston. 30th July Li-Kun attended GRC Angiogenesis at Newport, Rhode Island, and gave a talk in the session on ‘Mechanotransduction and Blood Vessels: Structure, Mechanics and Adaptation’. 14th July Yuchen from Fudan University and Yushu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University join the lab for a summer internship and left August 31st.
30th June Li-Kun attended the 75th Annual meeting of JSCB at Nara and gave a talk on the ‘Mechanics of blood vessel lumenization and remodelling'. 9th June Nitish Aswani joins the lab for a summer internship and left on August 18th.
1st June Mariia from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv joins the lab for a 6-month internship. 1st-9th March It was a special week in the lab with guests from IMB, University of Queensland - Anne, Emma and Jason. Thanks, Anne, for teaching us how to do zebrafish cell transplantations! We also had a hybrid meeting between our labs in Kobe and Brisbane. Let's do it again soon!
28th February It has been wonderful having Christina in the lab for almost two months. We made sure to send her off well by having a Yakitori party at Sannomiya. Thanks for coming and do visit us again!
19th-20th February Li-Kun gave a talk at the "New Horizons in Developmental Biology" Symposium held at IRCMS in Kumamoto University. Thanks Guojun for the invitation! 24th January Not only do Christina and Igor work on the same molecules in the zebrafish, they even share the same birthday (but not age)! And, Julien even made it here to celebrate their birthdays – isn’t he the best PhD supervisor?
10th January Christina from Julien Vermot’s lab in Imperial College London arrived. She will be with us until the end of February – can’t wait to see her exciting results! 2022 21st December Had our annual lab outing at atoa.
6th December Mat Francois from the Centenary Institute, Sydney, visited our lab!
30th November - 2nd December Li-Kun gave a talk at the Molecular Biology Society of Japan Meeting at Makuhari. 29th October Our lab was open to the public on RIKEN BDR Open Day. We received students from Grades 1 to 12 from international schools in Kobe. 13th-22nd September Li-Kun finally made a trip back to Europe to catch up with the vascular biology research community there. She visited Henry Belting and Markus Affolter at Biozentrum, Basel, where she also gave a talk. After that, she attended the 12th International Kloster Seeon Meeting in Germany where she was selected to give a short talk. June Resumed in-person meeting at the 55th Annual JSDB meeting in Kanazawa. It was a strong turnout from the Vascular Morphogenesis Lab with Igor, Yan, Swe Soe and Li-Kun giving three poster presentations and three talks combined. We enjoyed a great week of science, food and local culture!

2021 17th December We made a long-overdue lab outing to Animal Kingdom, down the road from our lab. It was fun to be out as a group and to be able to interact with the animals. The kids seemed more interested in eating popcorn though!
3rd December After a long wait to obtain her VISA to enter Japan during the pandemic and a 14-day stint in quarantine, we welcome Dr. Yan Chen to our lab! We wish you a smooth transition from Sheffield to Kobe and look forward to working with you. October We bid farewell to Nuria. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours. 21st October Li-Kun gave a talk in the Cell & Tissue Hydraulics Mini-Symposium organized by the Mechanobiology Institute, National University of Singapore. 8th October Li-Kun gave a short talk at the EMBO Workshop on Vascular Malformations. Thank you Mariona for selecting my abstract! 15th July Li-Kun gave a talk at the RIMS Workshop on Mathematical Mechanobiology at the University of Kyoto, Japan. 24th May We hosted an internship student, Shintaro Nishijo, from UCL Medical School for several months in our lab. Unfortunately for him (but fortunately for us), he was unable to attend in-person lectures in London and so spent most of the academic year in Kobe. 17th May While we welcome Guihua Chen to our lab, we bid farewell to Akane. Thank you Akane for all your hard work in helping set up the Phng Lab! We wish you all the best. 26th March Li-Kun gave a talk at the Vascular Biology Session in the 85th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society, Japan. 2020 3rd December Li-Kun gave a talk in the Workshop on Decoding and Engineering Cell Shape at the 2020 MBSJ Meeting. Thank you Yu-Chiun for the invitation! 30th October Li-Kun gave a talk at the MBI Conference on From Molecules to Organ: the Mechanobiology of Morphogenesis, National University of Singapore. 27th August The first paper from our lab has been accepted for publication in Nature Communications! Thank you to all those involved in making it happen, especially Igor and Doug. We celebrated with a bottle of champagne and the birth of an LVM baby two days earlier.
Congratulations to Joyce and Jeronica for obtaining their Master’s degree from Osaka University Graduate School of Frontier of Biosciences. We wish you both a bright future back in Singapore! 9th January We had a Welcome to 2020 lunch.
2019 4th December Li-Kun gave a talk at the “Mechanisms of Vascularization Regulating Organogenesis” Workshop at the 42nd Annual Meeting of the Molecular Biology Society of Japan, Fukuoka. 5th November Li-Kun gave a talk at Kanazawa University. Thanks Satoru Okuda for the invitation! 19th September Li-Kun gave a talk at the joint AAVBM/AVBS/ANZMS Meeting, Sydney 2019. 1st September Swe Soe Maung Ye and Jung Kyung Kim joined our lab and we had a welcome party.
4th August - 9th August Li-Kun attended the 2019 GRC Angiogenesis in Newport, RI, USA, and won a Poster Prize! 1st August Nuria Taberner Carretero joined our lab. 3rd July Jan Blaha, a student from University College London, Joined our lab as a summer internship student. We had a BBQ party to welcome him to our lab and Japan.
17th May Li-Kun have a talk at the“Cell and Tissue Mechanics of Organogenesis” workshop at 52nd Japan Society for Developmental Biology meeting, Osaka. 18th March We bid Doug farewell. It has been a great pleasure having him in our lab and we will miss having him around. We wish him and Claire all the best back in the UK! 2018 1st September Douglas Kelly joined our lab. 20 - 24th August The Laboratory for Vascular Morphogenesis hosted three internship students for the first time this year. It was an intense week for them (and Li-Kun) and their hard work was rewarded when they won two prizes! Best of luck to Ryosuke, Koichiro and Maaya in their studies and future research careers!.
